Joanna Atkinson – MBACP (Accred) Counsellor/Psychotherapist

I am working with clients presenting a wide range of psychological difficulties including depression, anxiety, stress, relationship issues or work related stress. These difficulties can be triggered by sudden changes in our life that happened recently or they can be triggered by memories of something that happened a long time ago.  Often the adverse experiences can be too overwhelming to overcome them by ourselves, leaving us feeling stuck in a vicious cycle for decades. But it is never too late to change something. I strongly believe that we all have an inner power enabling us to live the life we want to live. If there is a spark of hope in you, counselling can help you to realise your true potential.

I am a Humanistic Integrative Counsellor with a Level 4 Diploma in Therapeutic Counseling and a Level 5 Diploma in Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT). I work mainly using a Person-Centred approach combined with CBT. Working as a Person-Centred counsellor means that my work with you would be non-directive and tailored to your individual needs. This approach helps to develop trust in your own decision making, gain a stronger sense of self, and become more confident. Using CBT techniques can help you challenge and change unhelpful, negative thoughts and behaviours and thus improve your emotional state.

Before I started my private practice I gained my experience while working for STARS Dorset (Sexual Trauma and Recovery Service) where I specialised in working with individual clients, both male and female, who experienced sexual trauma and abuse. Traumatic experiences such as sexual abuse can often manifest themselves in relationship problems, low self-esteem, unhappy home and family life, depression, loneliness or anxiety, and sexual problems.

Being able to explore your worries and concerns with someone you can trust is a vital element of a therapeutic relationship. To open up and share all those difficult thoughts is not easy but I am here to help you not to judge you. Together we can try to find the best coping strategies in order to target your problems. If you would like to find out more about me please visit my website. I look forward to hearing from you.

I am registered with the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP) and I adhere to the BACP code of practice.
